ObituaryPaul T. Smith of N. Ft. Myers died at home on August 13, 2003 under the loving care of his family and Hope Hospice. He was born on April 3, 1937 to D. Holmes Smith & Isabel Tibbetts Smith in Long Lake, MN. The family moved 3 years later to the PW ranch west of Ft. Worth, TX where Paul spent his early years and attended St. Mary's Catholic grammar school. After World War II the family moved to Dallas, TX where Paul graduated from Jesuit High School. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in business administration. Following college hie joined Sears as a trainee in Dallas, TX. Later he become Southwestern Merchandise Manager for 7-14 Girlswear. He was promoted to New York City to become the National Girlswear Merchandise Manager and was later named to be a National Buyer of Girlswear in Chicago, IL. He finished his 25-year Sears career in Atlanta, GA as the Southern Regional buyer for all Children's wear departments. He retired from Sears to Tampa, FL. and then to Estero, FL, where he became active in the Villages at Country Creek Men's Golf Association. An avid golfer, he first served as President of the Association and then as a Board Director for several years. He founded Christmas Charity Golf in 1983, which became an extremely successful community wide annual charity fundraiser. In addition to the golf tournament, the event featured a community wide garage & bake sale with all the proceeds helping local charities. Paul traded golf for the river life when he and Barbara moved to N. Ft. Myers. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Paul is survived by his wife Barbara and four sons from a prior marriage, Paul Brent Smith and wife Julie of Tampa, FL; Brian Joseph Smith and wife Mary of Beavercreek, OH; Bruce Holmes Smith and wife Gina of Tampa, FL; Brad Tibbetts Smith and wife Lori of Baltimore, MD; six grandchildren, Jordan, Jayme, & Jessica of Tampa and Kristin, Austin and Meghan of Beavercreek. Also surviving Paul are his mother and father-in-law Howard and Julie Zirkelbach of Center Junction, IA. Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass, which will be celebrated on August 20, 2003 9:30 AM at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in downtown Ft. Myers. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice of Cape Coral.
