School SuperintendentWINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Paul Edward Smith of Winter Haven died of kidney failure Monday (April 28, 2003) at Life Care Center of Winter Haven. He was 88.Born in Louisa, Ky., on Aug. 30, 1914, he came to Winter Haven from Kent, Ohio, 29 years ago. He was a school superintendent in Ohio for 27 years. He was a teacher at Vanguard School in Lake Wales for 10 years. He was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers' Association.He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge in Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Scottish Rite in Canton, Ohio. He was a Tadmore Shriner in Akron. He attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, the University of Rio Grande, Ohio University and Ohio State University. He was an Army engineer veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa, France and Germany. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans in Ohio.He belonged to St. John's United Methodist Church in Winter Haven.Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Corliss J. Smith; and daughter, Vera Jane Hurlbut, Winter Haven.Visitation will be from 4 to 5 this afternoon at Trinity Mitchell Harden Chapel. Services will follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Florida Natinal Cemetery in Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
