Obituary of Paul Smith


SMITH, Paul Dorrien Passed away peacefully on September 9, 2003 in Qualicum Beach, B.C. Paul is survived by his wife Olive, daughters Helen (Jack) Saum, Jane Eccles Smith, son Paul Smith Jr., grandchildren Jack Saum, Kevin Saum, Andrea Baker, Kristopher Sorensen and Stephanie Sorensen. Stepson David Buchanan and step-grandchildren Laura, Adam, and Kate. Paul is predeceased by his first wife Anne. Paul was born in New Westminster to Paul Moody Smith and Helen Smith on January 29, 1915, he was educated in the lower mainland. In 1940 he began a life long career in the Canadian Army with the Canadian Corps of Signals and in January of 1970 retired with the rank of Brigadier General. For war time service in North West Europe, Paul was invested as Member, Order of the British Empire. His service included three years as Canadian Military Attache to Washington. Following his service, Paul served as Chairman, Regional District of Nanaimo until his second retirement in 1983. Paul had many interests but the outdoors was his passion, fly fishing, boating, upland bird hunting, or gardening. Memorial Service to be held Saturday, September 13, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Mark's Anglican church, Qualicum Beach, B.C. In lieu of flowers please make donations in memory of Paul to Nature Trust of British Columbia. Arrangements entrusted to Parksville Funeral Chapel Cemetery and Crematorium 250-248-4644.
