Obituary of Paul-Richard Miller


Paul Richard Miller, born June 12, 1913 in North Tarrytown, died peacefully at home in Tarrytown April 13, 2001. He was the son of Mary Budzak and Peter Miller. He graduated from North Tarrytown High School. Upon graduation he was employed by General Motors and was one of their public relations representatives at the 1939 New York World's Fair. At the outbreak of World War II, Paul Miller enlisted and was assigned to the Destroyer Escort, USS Pride. The USS Pride was credited with the sinking of an enemy submarine after a 24 hour battle. At the close of the war, Paul Miller worked for the US Maritime Commission. In 1953 he was employed by Columbia University and became Captain of the Research Vessel, the R/V Manning. The R/V Manning was involved with classified research in conjunction with the Office of Naval Research. This research led to the development of side scanning sonar for US Submarines. In later years they were involved in environmental oceanography. Mr. Miller was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Sleepy Hollow. He was also a member of the Tarrytown Boat Club for many years. On January 17, 1942 he married Anne D'Agostino in Immaculate Conception Church. They were married until her death in 1994. Paul Miller is survived by his five children, Valerie Cosgrove of Somers, NY, Janice Miller of Tarrytown, Richard Miller of Tarrytown, Gail Miller Sack of Los Gatos, CA, and Roger Miller of Cortlandt Manor, NY; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive him. Two sisters also survive him, Mrs. Anne Fenton and Mrs. Lee Maegerle of Tarrytown. His brothers, Joseph, William and Charles Miller predeceased him. There will be no visiting hours. His funeral Mass will be Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church at 11 am and interment will follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Donations in his name may be made to Phelps Hospice, 701 N.
