->OLD TOWN - Paul Joseph Smith, 60, passed February 23, 2015, at his home. He was born June 3, 1954, the son of Dale Vernon and Joan Marie (Doucette) Smith of Fort Fairfield.Paul always had a passion for history. He graduated from Fort Fairfield High School and received his Bachelor of Science and Masters in History from the University of Maine System. He began his teaching career at the Helen S. Dunn School, Greenbush, then taught at Penobscot Valley High School, Howland, and Old Town High School; where he retired June, 2014.Everyone who knew Paul, knew how much he enjoyed reenacting history. He belonged to the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Company "B". He was also a French and Indian War reenactor in the Samuel Goodwin Co., a Revolutionary War reenactor in the George White Co., and a member of the 74th Highlanders. He served on various boards including the Friends of Fort Knox for several years and the Old Town Museum Board. Paul also enjoyed bowling, golfing, going on cruises, spending time with family and friends, as well as being a voracious reader of historical non-fiction. He was a communicant of the Parish of the Resurrection in Bradley serving as a greeter and lector.Paul is survived by his wife of 21 years, Violet (Nichols) Smith; his two stepsons, Jerod and Aaron Nichols and his fiancee, Jenna Simone; brother, Peter Smith and his wife, Laurie; sister, Lori Lynch and fiance, Tobie Devoe; uncle, Glen Smith; two sisters-in-law, Donna Convery and husband, Ray, and Loretta Robichaud and husband, Leo; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Dale and Joan; aunt, Lorraine; and uncle, Sheldon and his wife, Martha.Friends may call 3-7 p.m. Friday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Bradley. Immediately following the service all are invited to a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent Friends of Fort Knox, P.O. Box 456, Bucksport, ME 04416.
