Obituary of Patricia-A. Bennett


Patricia A. McGurgan Loving mother, grandmother, teacher and good friend Age 50 of Elmira, died, very unexpectedly, Thursday, November 15, 2001 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Patty was born in Elmira on October 7, 1951, daughter of Hugh and Dorothy Gorsky McGurgan. She is predeceased by her mother, Dorothy McGurgan and brother, Robert McGurgan. Patty is survived by her son, Shaun T. Bennett of Elmira with wife Julie and children, Chadden, Sydney and Griffin; daughter, Monica A. Bennett of Elmira with special friend, Aric Brown and son, Timothy P. Bennett of Elmira; brothers, Thomas McGurgan of Elmira, Joseph McGurgan of Elmira with wife, Debra and Kevin McGurgan of Horseheads with wife Laura; sister, Kathleen Barnes of Pine City with husband, David; sister-in-law, Patricia Evans McGurgan of Buffalo NY along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and her family at Holy Family Schools and Notre Dame High School. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of Walnut and Water Sts., on Monday, November 19, 2001 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Patrick's Church, Elmira. Interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Patty graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1969 and then graduated from D'Youville College in Buffalo NY. Patty spent her career as a teacher at Holy Family Primary School. She had a passion for teaching and loved to be around children. Over the years Patty acquired a large collection of bears and angels that she received as gifts from her many students, which she cherished with all her heart. Not one to think of herself, Patty had no limitations when it came to helping others. Her caring and kindness touched not only her students, but all those that knew her. Patty was proud of her Irish heritage and proud of being a cancer survivor. In lieu of flowers, donations in Patty's memory may be directed to the Falck Cancer Center, 600 Roe Avenue, Elmira NY 14901 or the Josh Palmer Foundation, c/o The Community Foundation, 307B E. Water Street. Elmira NY 14901.
