SMITH, Patricia E., Clearwater, FL and Colchester, VT, 92, passed away December 25, 2013 at the Suncoast Hospice Care Center of North Pinellas in Palm Harbor, FL, following a brief illness. She was born in Windsor, VT on July 25, 1921, the daughter of William and Irene Mock. As a young woman, she played basketball on the Hartford High School women's team that won the state championship. Later in life she could be seen shooting basketballs in the driveway with her children, and sometimes mowing the lawn with a push mower. More than anything else she enjoyed her family, and cooking for her family and friends. She baked and liberally dispensed chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate, apple, pumpkin, cherry, and lemon merengue pies. Her chocolate candies were the first items to sell out at the church bazaars to which she regularly contributed. She enjoyed spectator sports, especially when rooting for teams on which her children or grand-children played. She was an avid and critical member of Red Sox Nation, and rooted for the Patriots. She was raised and lived most of her adult life in White River Jct., VT, until her children finished college and her husband retired from the telephone company. Then she and her husband lived briefly at Seymour Lake in Morgan, VT before dividing their time between the Burlington, VT area and Clearwater Beach, FL. She was a graduate of the Mary Hitchcock Hospital School of Nursing in Hanover, NH. While her children were young, she served as a school nurse in the Hartford Vermont School District. Later, she served as a private duty nurse, a hospital floor nurse, and eventually a nursing supervisor at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, until her retirement in the mid-1970's. She is survived by her husband, Herbert, and their children Gary Smith and his wife, Betsy Siebeck of North Pomfret, VT; Maureen Barnes and her husband, Gary, of South Burlington, VT and North Venice, FL; and Marsha Meekins and her husband, Bob, of Colchester, VT. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tao Smith of Killington, VT and his wife Dawn Barclay and their children, Hannah, Addie, Gaven, Ayden, Tess and Lil; Tyler Barnes and his wife Meghan and their son, Maddox, of South Burlington, VT; Rebecca Meekins of Colchester, VT and Grafton, MA; and Dylan Meekins of Colchester, VT. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Rogers, of Hartford, VT. She was predeceased by her grandson, Noah Siebeck-Smith of North Pomfret, VT and San Francisco, CA. She was a devout Catholic, and regularly attended St. Anthony's Church in White Rivert Jct., VT and St. Brendan's Church, in Clearwater, FL. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Spring at St. Anthony's Church in White River Jct., VT. The family would like to thank the attentive and caring staff at Mease Countryside Hospital in Clearwater, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
