SMITH, Patricia JoanBScN, RNPat died on June 5th, 2013 at St. Paul's Hospital, Saskatoon, after a brave and stoical battle with cancer. Pat was born in Regina on November 4, 1957. She had a remarkable intellect and could have succeeded in any walk of life. She chose to be a nurse and was a star. She was one of the leaders of the neonatal transport team in Saskatoon specializing in the safe transport by road or air ambulance of sick newborn babies. She was compassionate and innovative; if things did not go well, she did not look to blame anyone but determined to use the incident as a guide to improving the program - and did so. Pat was a fine photographer, an enthusiastic long-distance runner, skilled gardener and a world traveller who could always find something of importance that the rest of us missed. She had a nice sense of humor and was a formidable opponent at any game where a wide general knowledge was an asset. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend for nearly 20 years, Michael Tyrrell; her parents Janet and Roy Smith; her sister Susan Yuzik (Terry); brothers David Smith (Denise Deby), and Douglas Smith; nephews, Adam and Alex Yuzik, Ben and Robbie Smith, Thomas Tyrrell and niece Jessamy Tyrrell; brother-in-law Colin Tyrrell (Kathy); and step daughters, Claire and Michele Tyrrell. The family thanks Drs. Ken Stakiw, Vivian Walker, Tahir Abbas and Donna Slobodzian, as well as the palliative care unit staff at St. Paul's Hospital for their sensitive and professional care. Pat did not wish for a funeral service; there will be a celebration of Pat's life for family and friends announced in the near future. Instead of flowers, please donate to one of Pat's favorite charities: The Mennonite Central Committee or the Salvation Army.
