MITCHELL--Pamela Battey. Died on Cape Cod November 10, 2010. Born June 3, 1934 to Dorothy and Edward Battey, she spent her childhood in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, a town she always loved. She was a graduate of Oak Grove School in Vassalboro, Maine, attended Skidmore and Bennington Colleges, and graduated from Colorado College with a Bachelor of Arts, focusing on sculpture and dance. She spent two summers at Colorado College dancing under the direction of choreographer and modern dance educator Hanya Holm. She moved to Washington, DC in 1958 and worked on Capitol Hill for the late Senator Thomas Dodd of Connecticut. While working in DC she met Dr. Jere H. Mitchell, a physician scientist working at the National Institutes of Health. They married on October 1, 1960 and later moved to Dallas where they raised their three daughters and enjoyed a life filled with family, friends, travel and good heath. They developed a particular attachment for Copenhagen, Denmark, a place where they spent many summers. For the past twenty years, they spent part of each year on Cape Cod at their summer home, which Pam treasured. Throughout her life, Pam had an unusual sensibility and understanding of nature and an intense appreciation for the landscape and wildlife of Texas and her beloved Cape Cod. She was a committed environmentalist and a strong believer in preserving open space and habitats, particularly wetlands, for native plants and animals to thrive. Pam was known for having an eye for beautiful, artful objects. She had an extensive knowledge of art and antiquities from cultures all over the world. Her broad interest in art contributed to her imaginative, keen sense of style and her ability to bring together disparate objects in aesthetically pleasing and surprising ways. She enjoyed no place more than an ethnographic museum with a terrific collection. Those who knew Pam admired her athleticism, her strength, and her amazing skill as a downhill skier, an activity she enjoyed until very recently. Her strength was apparent as she endured the hardships of cancer; she was uncomplaining and strong throughout her illness, something her family and friends found remarkable and inspiring. Pamela is survived by Dr. Jere H. Mitchell, her husband of 50 years, and her three loving daughters: Wendy O'Sullivan (and her husband Jon) of Dallas, TX, Dr. Laurie Mitchell (and her husband Brent Woods) of San Diego, CA, and Amy Poeppel (and her husband David) of New York, NY. She will be greatly missed by her eight grandchildren, Mathew O'Sullivan, Megan O'Sullivan, Madeline Woods, Sophie Woods, Calvin Woods, Alex Poeppel, Andrew Poeppel and Luke Poeppel. She will also be remembered by many dear friends around the world. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in her name to Planned Parenthood, World Wildlife Fund, or VNA Hospice of Cape Cod.
