Nelson F. Gilman Jr.1923 -2014EAST WATERBORO - Nelson F. Gilman Jr., 91, of Farmington passed away in East Waterboro on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at the home of his daughter.He was born in Harmony on May 28, 1923, the son of Nelson and Elizabeth Gilman Sr. As a young man he worked for Hight Cheverolet in Skowhegan as a mechanic before moving on to Bath Iron Works during WWII. After living in Florida for a few years he moved back to Maine and worked for local garages and married Marie Stewart. In 1966 they moved to Hawaii for two years before making their way back to Maine. Nelson worked as a bus driver for seven years for SAD 9. He retired as a car salesman from Knapp Bros. in Kingfield upon their closing. He was a very active and committed Mason for over 40 years. Nelson enjoyed camping, gardening, reading, and collecting cars. He also enjoyed playing the banjo, his guitar, and listening to Bluegrass music. He was well known for his sense of humor and ability to entertain and tell jokes. He wintered in North Carolina for many years, where he made many lifelong friends.Nelson is survived by his son Gerry Gilman and significant other Nancy Weeks of Mercer, his daughter Donna Schofield and husband Paul of East Waterboro; his stepdaughter Rosalie Perkins and husband Lloyd of New Sharon; grandchildren Adam, Patrick, David, Carile, Sharon, Joanne, and Karen; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife Marie; a grandson Russell Greenwood; stepdaughter Gloria Barr; his brother Carl E. Gilman; and several half sisters and brothers.Visitation will be held on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, from 12-1 p.m., followed immediately by a funeral service at Adams-McFarlane Funeral & Cremation Services, 108 Court St., Farmington. Interment will take place in the spring at Strong Village Cemetery.
