Nancy Segar Patterson, wife of Dr. William C. Patterson, of 303 Milstead Way, in Greenville, S.C., died on September 9, 2013. Mrs. Patterson was born on May 19, 1922, in Harrisburg, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Niles Lucas Segar and Nellie Mae Bayer Segar. She spent her childhood in Mechanicsburg, Pa. She adored her older sister, the late Jane Segar Longenecker.Mrs. Patterson graduated from Carnegie Tech, in Pittsburgh, Pa. She lost her first husband, Allison Chapin, when he was killed while serving in World War II. On June 26, 1947, she married her husband, Bill, and they were devoted to each other for 66 years. Mrs. Patterson taught school in Hanover, Highspire, and Hershey, Pa., before moving to College Park, Md., and then to Athens, Ga., in 1961. In 1967, she became a teacher and then director of the First Presbyterian Church Weekday School, in Athens, where she taught for nearly 20 years. She loved teaching little children and began each school day with a personal prayer in the church sanctuary that the day would be a good and safe one for the children and teachers. Upon her retirement, she volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital and served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Patterson was an active member at First Presbyterian Church, served as an elder there, and was a faithful member of the choir. She will be remembered by her devotion to God and to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. She was a caring friend and will be remembered for her gifts of food, notes sent to many, and most of all for her sweet smile. She will be greatly missed.In addition to her husband, Mrs. Patterson is survived by her children, William Segar Patterson, Susan Patterson (James) Robbins, Steven Creigh (Joy) Patterson, and Nancy Patterson (Douglas) Hertha. She has eight grandchildren: David, Michael, and Lauren Robbins, Matt (Ginni) and Ben (Terryn) Patterson, Ginny Patterson (the Rev. Rossiter) Chellis, and Jamie and Robert Hertha. She also has one great-grandchild: Mary Patterson. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, at Rolling Green Village, 1 Hoke Smith Boulevard, Greenville, S.C. The Rev. Dave Sems will officiate, assisted by Chaplain Dan Groves. A visitation will be held following the service.The family is very grateful to the staff of Rolling Green Village for their love and care.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605; First Presbyterian Church, 185 E.
