Obituary of Nancy-L. Mitchell

Nancy Langham Mitchell of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., was born in her beloved city of New Orleans on April 15, 1943. She was the daughter of Cornelius K. Langham II and Jennie Gray Langham, two parents who adored her very much. Nancy went to join her Daddy on December 27, 2010.She is survived by her mother, Jennie of Shalimar, Fla.; her husband of 31 years, James W. Mitchell Jr., and his daughters, Stacey Mitchell (Steve) Yoakum of Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Amy Mitchell (Jamie) Ruark of Dunwoody, Ga. Nancy's daughter, Jenny Couvillon (David) Thomas of Pensacola, Fla., absolutely adored and idolized her. She is also survived by the best brother and sister-in-law she could ever want, Neil and Julie Langham of New Orleans. She was a great Nana to her grandson, Grant Thomas. She always spoiled him rotten. She also enjoyed visiting with Stacey's and Amy's children, Jackson Yoakum and Charlie and Lucy Ruark. She also leaves behind two wonderful nieces, Lori Langham (Richard) Black and Leslie Langham (John) O'Neal; and a nephew, Neil Louis Langham, who is her Godson, and his awesome little girl, Madelynn Langham Easley. Nancy is also survived by scores of devoted friends who were always there for each other.Nancy graduated from Southeastern Louisiana State University with a B.A. in education and from Troy State University with a master's in counseling. She taught first grade for 30 years, mostly at Cherokee Elementary at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. She was involved in many outreach and mission programs of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Walton Beach, and she served her community through the League of Women Voters, including serving as president of her local chapter.A true highlight of Nancy's life, and from which she took great pride, was her service as an elections supervisor in several nations of the former Yugoslavia. Through the efforts of her and her fellow supervisors, first ever democratic election processes have been established throughout the Balkans region. She developed a special place in her heart for the country of Bosnia-Herzegovina and its people.Lastly, Nancy will be sorely missed by her best buddies, the cats. They will no longer be able to drive her crazy by sitting on her head during the night.A memorial service will be held at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road N.E., Fort Walton Beach, on Jan. 3, 2011. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. with the service at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be at the Hope Mausoleum, St. John's Cemetery in New Orleans at 11 a.m. on Jan. 5.We extend our many thanks to all of our family and friends for their tireless support and prayers during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, we request donations be made to the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) of Fort Walton Beach, or to a charity of one's choice.
