Obituary of Nancy-Carol-Kingsley Smith

Nancy Carol Kingsley Smith 1942-2009 BRATTLEBORO Nancy Carol Kingsley Smith, a long time resident of Brattleboro, more recently of Troy, N.Y. died at the Samaritan Hospital at the age of 67 on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 following her long and arduous struggle with COPD. Nancy was born in Greenfield, Mass. on September 8, 1942, the daughter of Arnold W. and Sylvia LaRock Kingsley. She spent her childhood growing up on a dairy farm in Whitingham, Vt. where her love of animals was very evident. One of her favorite childhood pastimes was horseback riding and she always wanted the horse to go fast. For many of the years that she lived alone, she owned cats that not only provided companionship and affection, but also assisted her with her deafness alerting her to a ringing phone or a visitor at the door. In view of her profound deafness, Nancy spent the first few years of her schooling being privately tutored by Grace Raymond of Charlemont, Mass. with whose family she lived during this time. Nancy entered public school in grade 3 and graduated from Whitingham High School in 1962. She then attended Champlain College in Burlington, Vt. and graduated in 1964 with an accounting degree. Many of the comments written in her college yearbook refer to her as "the sweetest person I have ever met". Using the skills she gained while attending Champlain College, Nancy worked for many years in the offices of the former Book Press in Brattleboro. It was there that she met David Earnest Smith to whom she was wed on September 8, 1967 and together they had three sons. Despite the many obstacles in her life, Nancy devoted her life to and successfully raised her three boys. While caring for her children, she enjoyed and excelled at a wide range of handicrafts such as cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. She had a keen sense of humor and was quick to express the pleasure of a simple joke or a funny action. She also loved to play games; Rummy, Cribbage and Scrabble were among her favorites. Ms. Smith leaves behind a close friend, Earl Fitzgerald, of Troy. She is also survived by her mother, Sylvia Kingsley Bodine; her ex-husband, David Smith, of Hinsdale, N.H.; two brothers, Lee and Warren Kingsley; two sisters, Connie Burton and Sandra Kingsley; sister-in-law, Shirley Franklin; three sons - George Lee Smith and his wife, Kathleen, Aaron Ray Smith and his wife Jennifer, and Brady Scott Smith; five grandchildren - David, Alexander, Meeka, Adelaide, and Cooper; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father and her oldest brother Cleon Kingsley. A graveside service in memory of Ms. Smith will be held at Sadawga Cemetery on Route 100 in Whitingham, VT on Saturday, October 17, at 2 p.m. A reception will follow at the home of Sandra Kingsley on Rich Road in Wilmington. Memorial contributions in Nancy's memory may be made to Nancy's CHICKs, c/o George Smith at 1314 Sweetgum Lane, Matthews, NC 28105. Nancy's CHICKs (Charity for Hearing Impaired Children and Keepers) is a new non-profit organization that has been established to help single mothers raise children with hearing disabilities.
