ANDERSON (Marthold), Muriel Dean Lucy (née Barlow)January 1, 1929 - September 16, 2011It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Muriel Dean Lucy Anderson surrounded by her loving family. Muriel was born at Hughenden Manor in Buckinghamshire, England while her mother was visiting relatives. Her parents had earlier immigrated to a farm in Holden, Alberta. There were many stories of her pastoral childhood where she and her sisters attended a one-room schoolhouse that must have been the inspiration for all of them to become teachers. She earned a Normal Certificate at University of Alberta and later a Bachelor of Education at University of Calgary. Muriel was a well-respected and much loved educator. She taught at many elementary schools in Calgary including Colonel Sanders, Logos Christian, Huntington Hills, Dr. E.W. Coffin, Queen's Park, Albert Park and others. She was a keen advocate for physical education and one of her passions was to start badminton clubs for her students. At seventy- five years of age, she earned five medals in singles and doubles badminton at the Masters World Games. Muriel loved all sports and was a dedicated Calgary Stampeders' fan. Once retired, she volunteered her time at ESL teaching, The Women's Shelter, Inn from the Cold and the Cancer Society. She was an active member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and faithfully served with the Women's Missionary Society. Muriel was a voracious reader and writer. Her pastimes included: gardening, crossword puzzles, bridge, cribbage and board games. She was known for her boundless energy. More importantly, Muriel will be remembered for her loving and giving nature, her faith in God, and her belief in serving Him through others. She is predeceased by her first husband of forty-two years, Edward (Ted) and her son, David. She is survived by her children: Jim (Linda), Doug (T.J.), Kathryn (Brian) Speck and Sam (Claudette) and her adored grandchildren: Carissa (Vern) Pillay, Pierce, Kyle, Tascha, Reece, Rose, Camille, Kelsie, Wolf, Rachel, Kristian, Sarah and Carter. She is also survived by her husband of ten years, Michael Marthold, her stepchildren Mike (Bobbi) Marthold and Bill (Belia) Marthold and her step grandchildren Lindsay and Samantha. She will be deeply missed by her dear sisters: Connie McDougall, Beth (Ernie) Merta and Dorothy (Barney) Sigurdson and multiple nieces and nephews. Her sweet puppy, Charlie, is lost without her. A Memorial Service will be held at Bow Valley Christian Church, 5300 - 53 Avenue N.W., Calgary on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be available one hour prior to the service at Bow Valley Christian Church.
