HERRIN, IL - Gwendolyn Geneva Johnson, 69, of Herrin, Ill., passed away 12:55 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Herrin Hospital in Herrin surrounded by her loving husband and family. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and a former member of the Junior Women's Club. She was born October 23, 1940 in Sylacauga, Ala., to Eldred L. and Frances Hall (Moore) Rodgers. Gwen was united in marriage with James T. Johnson on July 5, 1957 in Sylacauga, Ala. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Jim Johnson of Herrin, Ill.; mother, Frances Rodgers of Sylacauga, Ala.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry Johnson of Park City, Ill., Garry and Tammy Johnson of Thompsonville, Ill., Tommy and Martha Johnson of Herrin, Ill.; three grandchildren, Tara Johnson of Energy, Ill., Samantha (Jason) Bauer of West Frankfort, Ill., Jordan (Jenny) Johnson of Energy, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, James Mattingly of Energy, Ill., Brooklyn Bauer of West Frankfort, Ill., Landyn Bauer of West Frankfort, Ill., Andrew Johnson of Energy, Ill., Colt Johnson of Energy, Ill.; sister-in-law, Susie Rodgers of Gila Bend, Ariz.; four nieces, Patricia Rodgers of Gila Bend, Ariz., Frances Rodgers of Gila Bend, Ariz., Susan Rodgers of Gila Bend, Ariz., and April Crawford of Sylacauga, Ala.; nine great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-niece and her dearest and best friend, Janice Colombo of Herrin, Ill. She was preceded in death by her father; brother, Samuel Rodgers; sister, Cheryl Crawford; and a nephew, Eric E. Crawford. A funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, Ill., with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Interment will be in San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin, Ill. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin, Ill. A prayer service will be conducted at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The preferred form of remembrance is memorial donations made to OLMC / St. Mary's School, 316 West Monroe, Herrin, IL 62948. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
