Obituary of Mrs. -Dorothy Lee


STATESBORO - Mrs. Dorothy Few Lee, age 89, died Saturday at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The Foreman, Ark., native was the daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin Charles Few and Kate Patterson Few. She was a 1935 graduate of Cotton Plant High School, attended Little Rock Junior College from 1936 until 1938, received her BA degree in religions education from Scarritt College in 1942 and her master's degree in speech from LSU in 1952. During her years in Arkansas, she taught school and served as a missionary in many areas. In 1955 Mrs. Lee moved to Statesboro and was hired by Dr. Fielding Russell to direct plays and to teach speech courses so that Georgia Teachers College could offer a minor in speech. With this position she became assistant professor. Mrs. Lee started the Drama Department of Georgia Teachers College as well as the Masquers Program. She was the director of the first play held at Georgia Teachers College. Mrs. Lee retired in 1981 as assistant professor. Following her retirement, she remained active in many educational and civic programs, teaching adult literacy, working with high school debate teams and doing reenactments of Martha Washington. She was a member of the Civic Garden Club and the Statesboro Women's Club. Mrs. Lee was very active in the Georgia Southern Botanical Gardens, the Averitt Center for the Arts and the Georgia Southern Performing Arts Center. She was a charter member of the Pittman Park United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Henderson Sunday School Class and active in many church events. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving mother, grandmother and cook who was known for her homemade rolls and pound cakes. Mrs. Lee was preceded in death by her husband, former Bulloch County Tax Commissioner, Winfield John Lee; two sisters, Katherine O'Kane and Margaret Bruner; and a brother, Benjamin Few. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Lisa Lee of Statesboro; two grandchildren, Whitney Leah Skeeters and Winfield John Lee III, both of Statesboro; a sister, Anne Easlick, and her husband, Gordon, of Perrinton, Mich.; and a brother, James Few of Hot Springs, Ark. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Pittman Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Huling officiating, assisted by the Rev. Hollie Tapley. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Eastside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be W. Pratt Hill, Alan Tyson, Randy Anderson, B.J. Tillman, Paul Collins and Bobo Hook. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Civic Garden Club and the Henderson Sunday School Class. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Dorothy Few Lee Scholarship Fund, c/o Georgia Southern University Foundation, P.O.
