Obituary of Mr. -Elmer-Eugene Moree


PELL CITY - Elmer Eugene Moreé of Pell City, Ala., passed away on June 14, 2010 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife, Charlie Mae Bailey Moreé; son, Gene Moreé (Donna); daughters, Amy Wicker (John) and Nancy Kilgroe (Ken); sister, Dorothy Moreé; and six grandchildren, Ashleigh Hoffmann (Brian), Jamie Waldrop (David), Sally McKay (Travis), Zach Wicker, Lara Kilgroe and Paul Kilgroe; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Rose Moreé; and four brothers and sisters. Mr. Moreé was born in Brownington, Mo., on December 11, 1918. He graduated from Shawnee Mound High School in 1936. He was named Most Valuable Player on the school's basketball team his senior year. He then served his country in the Army for four years during World War II, earning a Purple Heart for his courageous service. He met his wife of 66 years while stationed in Fort Benning, Ga. He attended Howard College and received his Bachelor's Degree in Education. He later attended the University of Alabama where he received his Master's of Education in Administration. Mr. Moreé spent 26 years in an educational career impacting the lives of many students, faculty and administrators in St. Clair County and the greater Birmingham metropolitan area. He first began his career as a teacher and basketball coach at St. Clair County High School in Odenville in 1950. After eight years in Odenville, he then transferred to South East Lake Elementary School in Birmingham as a teacher and later moved to Banks High School as Boys Advisor. In 1964, he became principal of Robinson Elementary School in Birmingham. In 1968, he became the principal of Woodlawn High School where numerous National Merit Scholars were awarded to pupils under his tutelage. He became the first headmaster of Franklin Academy in 1972 serving for the next three years. He ended his career at Coosa Valley Elementary School in Pell City as its principal from 1975 to 1978. Mr. Moreé was also elected to the St. Clair County Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Following his retirement from public education, he enjoyed many years of travel, golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 17 at 9:30 a.m. with services following at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Pell City. Graveside services will follow at the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Kilgroe Funeral Home - Pell City will direct the services.
