Obituary of Mother-Mary-Lee Carter

Mother Mary Lee Carter TRENTON - Mother Mary Lee (Hall) Carter "Momo," 97, of Trenton died Thursday, March 1, 2012, at Royal Health Gate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Toomsuba, Laurel County, MS. In 1930, she married the late Rev. Albert Carter. This union was blessed with one daughter, Bessie Mae Carter Jones. The family migrated to Oveido, FL, before settling in Trenton, NJ, in 1954. She retired from the Trenton Board of Education. Her Christian journey started at New Salem Baptist Church and continued at El Bethel Baptist Church, where she was elevated to Church Mother. Her journey culminated as the Matriarchal Church Mother at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Catherine and Henry Hall; beloved daughter, Bessie; 10 siblings, Willie, Minnie Bell, Lula, Mahalia, Robert, Solomon, Josephus, Manus, Annie, Henry Allen, and a grandson, Frank E. Jones (Ruth). Surviving are a son, Rev. Frank Reed (Ronique); grandchildren, William E. Jones III (Deandrea), James A. Jones, Marion Jones-Allen (James), Arthur G. Jones (Barbara), Debra Jones-Stevenson, and Kathy J. Jones (Alphonso); her devoted nephew, Josephus White; nieces, Betty "BeBe" and Rosie White, and a host of other nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and her special friends, The Sunday Girls (Gladys Jackson, Dorothy Ponder, Helen Sanderson and Barbara Sample), along with two very special family friends, Leverne "My Steve" Stevenson and Dorothy McGlothen. Funeral services will be Friday, March 9, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church 735 E. State St. Trenton, NJ. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church.
