RUTLAND -- Monsignor Francis Bernard Flanagan, 100, died July 5, 2007, at Rutland.Born in Rutland on Sept. 16, 1906, the son of Dennis and Alice (McGarraghy) Flanagan, Father Flanagan was a graduate of the Seminary of Philosophy and the Grand Seminary in Montreal. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 21, 1932, by Archbishop Georges Gauthier. His assignments began at St. Mary, Fair Haven, (1932). He also served at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Burlington (1932-1935) and St. Francis de Sales, Bennington (1935-1939).Msgr. Flanagan’s first Pastorate was at St. Theresa, Gilman(1939-1942). He served as a chaplin in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946 and as chaplin for the 540th Engineer Combat Group at Anzio, Italy in 1944. He was privileged to attend the first audience of Pope Pius XII given to the American soldiers after the liberation of Rome. He was awarded the honor of the Bronze Star by the 540th Combat Group.He also served as pastor at St. Columban, Arlington (1946-1951), St. Alphonsus, Pittsford (1951-1961) and St. Francis de Sales, Bennington (1961-1981).On Oct. 7, 1961m he was named domestic prelate under the title of monsignor. He served as dean of the Bennington County, Diocesan Consultor and was a member of the Presbyteral Council. Msgr. Flanagan retired in 1981.Survivors include a sister-in-law, Moira Flanagan of Rutland, 10 nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews..A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday July 9, 2007, at 11 a.m. in St. Peter Church in Rutland by Bishop Salvatore R. Matano. The homilist will be the Rev. Thomas V. Mattison. There will be no calling hours.Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Rutland.Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland is in charge of arrangements.
