Mollie Clotile Elizabeth Dawson HarrisDecaturMrs. Mollie Clotile Elizabeth Dawson Harris lovingly known to many as "Mama Clotie" was born October 30, 1914, in Prospect, Tennessee, to the late Benton Dawson Sr. and Datie Bassham Dawson. Clotile was the oldest of 13 children born to their union. She was preceded in death by ten sisters and brothers, Carrie, Paul Dunbar, Joseph, Clara, Oscar, Robert, Sarah, Benton, William and Henrietta. Mama Clotie was a devoted mother to her two sons, Maurice "Scribby" Harris and Harold "Genie" Harris, both of whom preceded her in death.Clotile accepted Christ at an early age at Browns Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Prospect, Tennessee. Her family later joined Jones Chapel Methodist Church after relocating to Decatur. When Jones Chapel later merged with King's Memorial United Methodist Church, Clotile selflessly shared her spiritual gifts. Mrs. Harris was very active in her church giving her time, talent, and service. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Hattie Taylor Circle, the Communion Stewards, and an active member of the Hospitality Committee until her health failed.Known in the community for her outstanding cooking and southern hospitality, Mama Clotie was featured in The Decatur Daily newspaper and several cookbooks for her recipes. Everyone loved her turkey and dressing, homemade rolls, fruit cakes and delicious apple pies. Fine dining, plentiful portions of food, and a well-appointed table setting was the rule in her house and not the exception. The holidays were special for her grandchildren, other family members, and friends because of the delicious treats she prepared for them. Mrs. Harris was gainfully employed for over 75 years. She was employed by the City of Decatur Parks and Recreation Department - Jessie Lewis Smith (East Town) Park, the Princess Theater, and the Sterrs Daycare Center where she retired after many years of service.Mama Clotie leaves to cherish her memory two devoted daughters-in-law, Annie Ruth Harris and Mable Harris of Decatur; four granddaughters, Gloria H. Flowers, Clotile Yvette (Sam) Rice and Yolanda Beth Harris, all of Decatur, and Amanda H. (Lonnie) Goodson, Tucson, Arizona; two beloved children, Sara Montez (Carl) Bradley, Huntsville and Leonardo Mathews, Chicago, Illinois; two loving sisters, Edna D. Priest, Decatur and Eleanor D. (Clarence) Mitchell, Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Annie Bell Dawson, Chicago, Illinois and Eunice Dawson, Decatur; eight great-grandchildren, Rickey, Joseph, Sharne', Stedman, Spencer, Samuel Christopher, Jelonni and Alexis; special cousin, Elizabeth (Bob) Henry; special caregiver, Carrie Griffin; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.A Celebration of Life will be 1 p.m. Friday at King's Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Rod Stallworth officiating and inhumation to follow in Decatur City Cemetery-Sterrs Addition. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. Public viewing will be today from 2 to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Flower attendants will be nieces and the United Methodist Women. Pallbearers will be nephews and the United Methodist Men.
