Mildred Wilson Harris Utica Mildred Wilson Harris, 83, departed this life suddenly on Sunday, October 23, 2011. She was born on September 14, 1928, in Houston County, AL, to the late Theodore and Effie Dora (Garrard) Wilson. She married the late Roy Harris in 1953 and obtained her education at the Utica School of Commerce. Mrs. Harris came to Utica in 1946 and joined St. Paul's Baptist Church in 1951, where she served faithfully for 60 years. Her duties in the church included Sunday School Teacher, Church Secretary (spanning the tenure of five Pastors), Church Historian, member of the Deaconess Board, and the Missionary Society & Search Committee. She was formerly employed by Hotel Utica, the Savings Bank of Utica, Utica Public School System, Griffiss Air Force Base and the Visiting Nurse's Association. Mildred was considered a pillar of the community as well as the church. As a devoted Christian, she served as a trusted friend and a confidant to all who knew her. She was the original founder of Uticas Octavo Social Club. She served on boards of the Cosmopolitan Center, Uticas YWCA, Oneida County Home Extension Service, NAACP, Church Women United and countless civic and community activities. Mrs. Harris leaves to cherish her memory two children, Senior Chief Carleton (Michelle), US Navy, San Diego, CA, and Janet, Utica, NY; one brother, Theodore R. (Joyce) Wilson, Jr., Stone Mountain, GA; two sisters, Ernestine Wilson, Stone Mountain, GA, and Loretta Johnson, Utica, NY; two brothers-in-law, Blanton White, East Orange, NJ, and E.J. (Eddie-Lee) Harris, Chicago, IL; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Alison and Marie Jenkins, both of Detroit, MI; close personal friends, Mrs. Barbara Allen, Portsmouth, VA, Mrs. Mildred Burke, Mrs. Beulah Thompson and Mrs. Brenda Fudge, all of Utica, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, church family and friends. She was predeceased by five sisters, Beulah Mae (Blanton) White, Ruby Lois Oliver, Dorothy Jean (Rev. Willie James) Betton and Mabel Wilson; one brother, Ralph Wilson; and three brothers-in-law, German Sam Holloway, Alter Lee Boykin and Gordon Johnson. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T. Revels-Gibson Funeral Home, 144 EagleStreet, Utica, NY. Viewing will be held on Friday, October 28, at St. Paul's Baptist Church, 219 Leah Street, Utica, NY, from 12-1 p.m. Funeral services will immediately follow. Mildred Harris
