Obituary of Mildred-H. Wood


Mildred H. “Mickey” Wood, 93, of New Oxford, Pa., entered into God’s care Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Hanover Hospital. She was the wife of the late Harry “Jack” C. Wood who died Sept. 4, 1996. Born Dec. 16, 1910, in Decatur, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Alvie and Daisy Mae Norris Handley. Mrs. Wood lived in Arlington, Va., Washington, D.C. and Hartselle, Ala. before moving to the Brethren Home Community in New Oxford with her daughter in the year 2000. Mickey and her husband Jack enjoyed traveling and did so together extensively. During her travel she witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall and walked on the Great Wall of China. Mrs. Wood was a homemaker and excelled in the domestic arts. She enjoyed people and was a member of the Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., Central United Methodist Church in Decatur, Ala. and First United Methodist Church in Hanover, Pa. where she also was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Dorcas Circle. She is survived by a daughter, Jan W. Zimmerman of New Oxford; and a granddaughter, Rebecca J. Zimmerman of Salem, Mass. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene, Eckman and Louis Moore and Carl Handley. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 3, 2004, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 200 Frederick Street, Hanover with the Rev. Dr. Thomas K. Cartwright officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at the church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Building Fund of First United Methodist Church, 200 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA 17331. Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle Street, Hanover is in charge of arrangements.
