MILDRED WOODS Mildred Evelyn (Freytag- Peterson) Woods, age 89, went home to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, January 9, 2015. Mildred was born to George and Irmgard Freytag and grew up in the town of River Grove, near Chicago. She was the youngest of four children; William, George Jr. and Irmgard. Some of her fondest memories were of working summers at Riverview Amusement Park. During WWII she worked for Admiral Radio as part of the signal core and was quickly promoted to line inspector. After the war ended, she was the only woman they retained, and she was promoted. She met returning sailor, William Peterson, in 1946, and was married shortly afterwards. They moved to Lansing, IL in 1947 and had three children; Carl, Janis, and Nancy. She was a devoted mother, an energetic homemaker, and a welcoming friend to her neighbors. Her husband passed away unexpectedly in 1964 and she was a widow until 1977. In 1975, she became reacquainted with Arthur Woods Sr., an old boating friend who had recently lost his wife, Ruth. They were married in 1977 and she became step-mother and step grand mother to a whole new family of loved ones. They relocated to Saint John, and a few years later, to Schererville, and became full-time flea-marketers at Uncle John's Flea Market. They were able to take many cruises and enjoyed the travel and the exotic locales. In 2006 they sold their home and move to a retirement townhouse and then, in 2012, to an independent living complex. Art went home to be with the Lord in 2013 and has been greatly missed. Mildred relocated to Munster Med Inn in 2014 and enjoyed visits and outings with loved ones until her health failed and the Lord called her home. We will miss you, dear one, until we can see you again in heaven. Mildred is survived by her son, Carl Peterson and her daughter-in-heart, Debra; her daughter Janis Kief, Hans, and her beloved granddaughter, Stephanie Kief; her daughter Nancy Liptak and Andrew; her beloved step-children: Arthur Woods Jr. and Sally, Curtis Woods and Marsha, Melanie Woods-Simmons and Edward, and the step-grandchildren that God added to her life: Arthur Woods III (Mary Lucente), David Woods (Josie Mendez), Cara Lee Benke (Larry), Samantha McDonald (David), Lora Bielfeldt, Lylli Noonan (Jason), Heath Woods (Dawn), Michael Wachowski (Jennifer), Chris Simmons (Liz), Angie Gora (Keith), Shawn Liptak (Amee), Shane Liptak (Shannon). She was also blessed with eighteen step great grand children, two great great grandchildren, many wonderful nieces and nephews, special friends, and dear friends Fred and Virginia Sansone and Bill Rominger. The wake will be on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Castle Hill Funeral Home 1219 Sheffield Avenue Dyer, IN 46311 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. when a funeral service will begin with Pastor Steve Miller officiating followed by a private family interment.
