Michael-Laurence Smith, died at 2 years old. Please consult the obituary here:
SMITH, Michael Laurence (Mike) 30th January 1937 - 17th December 2010 Michael was born in Whitby, Yorkshire and drafted into the army Intelligence Corp at 18. He was soon transferred to Water Transport and shipped off to Hong Kong, where he spent 2 1/2 years running boats in the harbor. On returning to England, he went into Hotel Management training. Awaiting entry to the Savoy he continued with interviews because prospective employers would pay for train fare and meals and by making two appointments per day he could get double payment. However, a good thing was put to an end, as was Hotel Management, by a job offer with Gestetner. He married his sweetheart Barbara in 1960, to whom he was devoted until his death. They quickly decided to move to Barbara's birthplace, Vancouver, which Michael instantly loved. He promoted Canada avidly and became a Canadian citizen at the earliest opportunity. In 1973, after a successful career in sales, Michael started Townline Office Systems with a colleague. This was followed by a leasing Company he ran with Barbara and then Townrent, which provided office furniture, equipment and set decor for Movie Productions. Selling up in 2000, Michael became an Associate with Pyx Financial Group and took up hobbies for which he had never had time. Barbara pointed out his love of cars, so he dove in with the acquisition of his first Bentley (1959), followed by a 1984 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit a handful of Jaguars and finally 2 Rolls Royce Silver Seraphs. Barbara insisted that this was far too expensive, so he turned his passion to rare single malt whisky, soon assembling an enviable collection. In his neighbourhood, Michael became every dog's best friend. They always knew he had a cookie in his pocket and their owners could never get past Michael's garage without looking for him. He also became the local snow blower, cleaning neighbours' sidewalks and driveways with each snowfall. Earlier this year he and Barbara celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Michael was associated with several car clubs and whisky associations. His affable and generous personality brought many additions to the lifelong friendships he made and maintained from his early days in England and through his many years in Canada. Affectionately known to his friends as The Landlord Michael was a wonderful host and gatherings at his home became legendry. Michael had an enormous heart for his friends and he will be sorely missed by them, Barbara and Coco. No service by request, but donations to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Coquitlam Animal Shelter would be appreciated.
