LEOMINSTER -- Michael E. Iannacone, 88, of 233 Tisdale St., died Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the Bedford Veterans Administration Medical Center, after an illness. He was born Aug. 9, 1918 in Fitchburg, son of the late Antonio and Maria (Lombardi) Iannacone. Mr. Iannacone was a 1937 graduate of Saint Bernard’s Central Catholic High School where he was a standout football player. He served in the United States Army during World War II earning the rank of sergeant with the Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion 359th Infantry. During his service, Sgt. Iannacone earned the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with Device and 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with Three Service Stars while serving in Normandy, northern France, and Germany. Following his service, Mr. Iannacone worked for Barba Plumbing and Heating for 20 years when he began a 22 year career as a plumber and steamfitter at Fort Devens until his retirement in 1985. He also worked for Leominster Heating for several years. He was a member of Saint Anna’s Church, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Post 0151, and the Sons of Italy. He leaves his wife, Gladys (Cocci) Iannacone; his son, Michael J. Iannacone of Leominster; his daughter, Carole Borja of Leominster; four grandchildren, Brian Iannacone of Leominster, Dean Iannacone of Winchendon, Kevin Iannacone of Leominster and Cari Borja of California; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Elena Boncyk of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, John, Frank, Anthony and Alfred Iannacone, and his sisters, Josephine Barba, Margaret Iannacone and Marie Iannacone. IANNACONE -- The funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 16, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anna’s Church, 194 Lancaster St., Leominster. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon. A calling hour will precede the Mass Friday, Feb. 16, from 8-9 a.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701, or in Memory of Michael E.
