Michael Anderson, spouse of Shirley Anderson, father of Michelle and Michael Anderson, died on April 23, 2003. Please consult the obituary here:
Anderson Anderson, Captain Michael, passed away April 23, 2003 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, from heart failure. Not from the failure of his heart and love for others, but from the physical frailty shared by us all. He was eighty three. Captain Anderson led a colorful life. Born Alcide Miculicich in 1919 on the island of Lussinj in the Adriatic Sea, now part of Croatia, he was trained to be a seaman and served on ocean liners to the Orient and across the Atlantic. He jumped ship in New York where he started and owned a restaurant. He served in the US Army in WWII in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, and thereby earned his US citizenship. He was awarded two Bronze Star medals for valor as well as theatre decorations. Home, he took up sport flying and sailing, owning both airplanes and sailing yachts in the New York area and in Miami. He made his home in Miami and raised his family there. Professionally, he was the Captain of yachts for John Hertz, rental car heir, Ross Siragusa, founder of the Admiral Corporation, George Storer, founder of Storer Broadcasting, and Frank Basil, owner of an international engineering company, all some of the rich, if not very famous, of the time. He hob-nobbed with their friends, who became his: Katheryn Hepburn, Erroyl Flynn, (now) King Carlos of Spain, Lady Bird Johnson, Howard Hughes and, oddly, Evil Knevil, to name a few. He was Master of the famous sailing yacht Ticonderoga, whose owner, John Hertz, fired him in the middle of a race from Havana, Cuba, to San Sebastian, Spain, only to rehire him an hour later with the order to remind Mr. Hertz to fire him again when they landed in Spain. Captain Anderson did, and Mr. Hertz didn't. His last fifteen years at sea was as Master of the 115 foot motor yacht Sophie B, cruising extensively through the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas and the Atlantic coast of the US. He took the Sophie B across the Atlantic many times on her own bottom, unusual for yachts to this day. He retired to Fort Lauderdale, a big-yacht international crossroads, and enjoyed visits with his multitude of friends here and from around the world. Captain Anderson is survived by: his ex-wife, Shirley Anderson; four children, Michelle Gallagher, Michael Anderson Jr., Guido Anderson, and Blaise Anderson; and three grandchildren, Michael Gallagher, Kyle Gallagher, and Blaise Ann Good.
