Maurice R. Viens Jr. SOUTH PORTLAND -- Maurice R. Viens Jr. passed away on Feb. 4, 2010, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. His benevolent nature, sharp wit and dry sense of humor will be sadly missed. He was born in Dalton, Ga., on May 17, 1944, the son of the late Maurice R. Viens Sr. and Royce (Richards) Viens. By his family, he was known as Roger. At South Portland High School where he played catcher on the baseball team and quarterback on the football team, he was called 'Mo.' Mo went on to play star quarterback at Bowdoin College and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. After college, Mo was positioned as quarterback for the Montreal Bearcats and later for the South Boston Chippewa's. In 1973 Roger moved to California and worked in sales. He enjoyed the climate, playing golf and viewing college football. He was an avid reader and fitness enthusiast. At the urging of his best friend, the late Robert Hanson, Roger attended Western State University College of Law where he graduated in 1998 and was elected Vice President of the Oral Advocacy Society. Roger is survived by his loving sister Laurice with whom he lived since returning to Maine in October and her fiance Gary Mortenson of Cape Elizabeth, his sister, Nancy Peterson and her husband Paul of Pocatello, Idaho; as well as several nieces and nephews.
