Maurice C. Orbeton Jr. PALM BAY, Fla. - Maurice C. Orbeton, Jr., U.S. Navy Retired, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005 at William Childs Hospice House, Palm Bay, Fla. Cdr. Orbeton was born in Bangor in 1922. He attended the University of Maine and graduated the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., Class of 1945. Cdr. Orbeton served 34 years in the armed forces of the United States. His service commenced in 1936, when at the age of 14, he enlisted in the 152nd Field Artillery Band of the Maine National Guard. During World War II, he served on the U.S.S. Winslow, D.D. 359. Continuing his naval career, he served on eight combatant ships, of which he commanded three. His shore duties were in the Intelligence field. He graduated the Defense Intelligence School in Arlington, Va., and was ordered to the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Italy, for three years as an assistant naval attache. He retired in 1970. While retired, he served as a U.S. Naval Academy Blue and Gold Information Officer for South Brevard County, Fla. As such, he assisted academically superior students in receiving appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy. He belonged to the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Assn., Cape Canaveral Chapter of the Military Officers of America, the V.F.W., and the U.S. Navy League. He was a devout Christian and a member of the Satellite Beach United Methodist Church. Cdr. Orbeton is survived by his wife, Susan; four children, Kathryn O. Greenberg, John Robinson Orbeton, Ellen G. Orbeton, R.N., Mary O. Bellomo; and four grandchildren. His first wife, the former Grata Robinson of Falmouth Foreside, predeceased him as did his identical twin brother, Everett Arnold Orbeton, M.D. of South Portland, Virginia O. Grazier and Helen M. Orbeton. No calling hours are scheduled. Burial will be in the New Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta at 1 p.m., Oct. 21. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to hospice or the Alzheimer Association. Maurice C. Orbeton Jr.
