1940-2014 ATHENS - Maureen Terry (Philbrick) Smith, 73, died Feb. 10, 2014, at her home. She was born May 5, 1940, in Waterville, the daughter of Franklyn L. And Ethel May (Larrabee) Philbrick. She grew up in Knox and graduated from Freedom Academy in 1958. During her younger adult years, she was employed by the local theater and sardine factory in Belfast. She also worked in banking, real estate and later operated the Newell & Smith Insurance Agency in Gorham with her husband, Alan. She had many hobbies and interests including traveling throughout the United States with Alan in their RV, playing golf with Alan and friends at the Clerbrook Resort in Florida during the winter months, snowmobiling with special friends Jeanette and Raymond Thompson, watching her grandchildren play sports and the Boston Celtics on TV, and she had the most fun hitting golf balls with Nick in the backyard. Maureen loved all of her family very much and cherished time spent with them. Maureen is survived by two daughters, Karen Clark and husband Matthew, of Athens, and Amanda Sanborn, of Gorham; son Jeffrey Smith and wife Anne, of Haverhill, Mass.; grandson Nicholas Clark, of Athens; two granddaughters, Sarah Sanborn and Melissa Sanborn, both of Gorham; five sisters, Joan Goodwin, of Auburn, Nancy Cunningham and husband Norman, of Palermo, Mary Cote and husband Ronald, of Greene, Margaret Sirois, of Sidney, and Susan Philbrick, of Knox; four brothers, Franklin "Skip" Philbrick and companion Carol, of Brooks, Peter Philbrick and wife Sadie, of Knox, Paul Philbrick and wife Michelle, of Knox, and Michael Philbrick and wife Roxanne, of Knox; aunt Leona Curtis, of Bridgton; sister-in-law Jeanette Webb, of Brockton, Mass.; many cousins, nieces, nephews; and special friend, Victoria Avery, of Athens, who she enjoyed spending time with going shopping, gardening and just watching TV. She was predeceased by her husband, Alan Smith; parents; beloved aunts and uncles; and sisters Kathleen and Debbie Philbrick. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.
