Obituary of Mattie-Mae-Winchester Smith


SMITH, Mattie Mae Winchester, 97, of Lake Placid, Fla., formerly of Arcadia, Fla., went home to greet her Lord November 12, 2009, in Lake Placid. Mattie Mae was born September 9, 1912, in Moultrie, Ga., to Frank and Wilie Mae Winchester. Mattie was a homemaker for her beloved husband, Herman, who retired from Publix as a district manager. He and George Jenkins, founder of Publix, were very good friends and enjoyed golfing together. Mattie moved to Lake Placid to be cared for by her niece, Janene Smith. Janene looked after Mattie and her affairs for more than 14 years. Mattie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church while living in Arcadia. After moving to Lake Placid, she moved her membership to Faith Baptist Church. Mattie was a very generous person, contributing to the Florida Drama Foundation, which honors both she and her husband, Herman. Her survivors are two grand-children, Master Sgt. James E. (Donna) Costin of Massachusetts and Allison Tatum of Texas. She also has three grandchildren, Tom Costin, Craig Costin and Ray Tatum. Mattie has three sisters-in-law, Tiny Winchester of Melbourne, Fla., Monnie Winchester of Gainesville, Fla., and Bonnie Smith McGowan of Lake Park, Fla. Mattie was the last of 11 siblings. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Herman (November 7, 1995); and a daughter, Patricia Smith Costin (July 11, 1981). Mattie will be missed dearly by special friends, Helen Sue Bradford of Lake Placid and Evelyn Walker of Arcadia, and a host of friends. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2009, graveside, at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Arcadia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the donor' s favorite charity or church.
