Matthew Joseph Cox, 10, of Saco, Maine, flew to Heaven on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Boston Childrens Hospital as a result of a traumatic brain injury on Dec. 26, 2013. Son of Bill and Ann (Dupill) Cox, he was born Aug. 21, 2003. Matthew attended Ridge Hill School in Norwell, Mass., Cedar Elementary School in Hanover, Mass., and CK Burns Elementary School in Saco, Maine. An avid sports enthusiast, Matthew excelled in all sports including football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse and basketball. His favorite sport by far was ice hockey, playing with the Hanover Youth Hockey Association for two years. After moving to Saco, Maine, in Sept. 2013, Matthew joined the Casco Bay Hockey Association Avalanche and Crush EP teams. Matt lived life to the fullest always willing to try new things. He recently started to learn how to play the guitar and joined a lego club. Matt had a very kind heart and took very good care of his sisters and cousins. He was a gentle giant. Matthew was a gift from God from the day he was born and had deep faith. Shortly after his accident, Matthew was confirmed and was given the name Matthew Joseph John Paul II Cox. Matthew is survived by his parents, Bill and Ann (Dupill) Cox; sisters, Kaitlyn and Molly; his aunts and uncles, Christopher and Kara Dupill of Easton, Mass., Mike and Jenny Dupill of Quincy, Mass., Eileen and Bernie Feeney of Whitman, Mass., Louise Cox of Danvers, Mass., Kathleen Cox of Orange, Mass., and Thomas Cox of Beverly, Mass.; his maternal grandmother, Peggy Dupill of Quincy, Mass.; as well as many cousins. Matthew was predeceased by his grandparents, William and Mary Cox of Salem, Mass. and Bertrand Dupill of Quincy, Mass., and his cousin, Joseph Dupill of Quincy, Mass. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial to be held at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover Street (Rte. 139), Hanover, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at 11 a.m. All are invited to attend. The burial immediately following at Hanover Center Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boston Childrens Hospital, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02115.
