DURHAM — Mary (Fountaine) Williams, 100, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, in Durham. She was born Jan. 1, 1910 in Monroeville, Ala., the daughter of Ishmael and Sarah (Stallworth) Fountaine. She lived in New York for 76 years until moving here last June to live with her daughter and family. She loved her adopted home and driving around the Granite State or tooling around Durham/UNH in her wheelchair.An avid reader, she was passionate about education, recalling when she was a little girl in Alabama and how Jim Crow laws made educational opportunities difficult. She often told the story of being taunted with racial slurs by white children riding on school buses while she and her siblings and cousins walked long distances to and from school. Since 1949, she lived across the street from a high school and often encouraged and reminded neighborhood children how fortunate they were. "All you have to do is cross the street and no one bothers you,'' she said. With her support, her daughters excelled in college and graduate school. She was instrumental in educating her siblings, their children and grandchildren. Her giving knew no bounds.She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Cassaundra Williams Anderson and Marion Anderson of New York, and Michelle O'Donnell and Martin O'Donnell of Durham; and a sister, Ernestine Fountaine of Alexandria, Va.
