Born in Simpsonville, she was the daughter of Jesse Roy and Lena Bell West. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of almost 72 years, Charles P Nelson, her son Bob Nelson, her sister, Mina West, brothers Floyd West and Bill West, and her grandson Buster Nelson. She is survived by a son, Dan Nelson, two daughters in law, Reba Nelson and Maggie Nelson; grandchildren Erin N. Sacra, Ali N. Foster, Kevin Jolly and Elizabeth Jolly, and 8 great grandchildren. After graduating from Simpsonville High School in 1940, Mary married Charles in 1941. While he was enlisted in the Navy, Mary followed him to many different places around the country and was a stay at home mother to her two sons. Mary's family was of the utmost importance to her. Charles and Mary were always seen together holding hands and very much in love even in their last years. Mary loved her children and grandchildren with all of her heart.Mary spent her entire life in the service of the Lord. She was a member of First Baptist church Simpsonville, where she was dedicated to serving others. Mary was a member of the Moorhead Mission Group and Esther Sunday School Class. Charles and Mary spent much of their lives going on Missions trips, serving at Diamond Health Center, volunteering at her church, and helping others in any way they could.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Simpsonville First Baptist Church Chapel with entombment to follow in Cannon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at the church prior to the service.In lieu of flowers, she requested memorials be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (26 Broadway, New York NY 1004) or to the Building fund of First Baptist Church Simpsonville.
