Mary Virginia Johnson FLORENCE Mary Virginia Calhoun Johnson, 82, a resident of the Presbyterian Community of Florence at 2350 W. Lucas Street, formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at home. Mrs. Johnson was born on Feb. 11, 1932 in Greensboro, NC, daughter of the late Ira Angus Calhoun and Ida Elizabeth Ives. She graduated from Dreher High School in Columbia in 1950, attended the Women's College of North Carolina in Greensboro for one year, earned an A.B. in elementary education from the University of South Carolina in 1954, and began her elementary school teaching career at Briggs School in Florence. She was a 50-year member of Central United Methodist Church of Florence. A "leftie," she loved to dance, draw, and paint and was devoted to cats and wildlife. In 1960, she married Robert N. Johnson, Jr. of Marion, who died in 1976. She liked to joke that it was a "mixed marriage," as her husband was a graduate of Clemson University, a civil engineer, and a Baptist. After having a family, Mrs. Johnson taught mostly second grade at Pee Dee Academy in Mullins from 1965 to 1998. She was honored upon her retirement when the new wing of the elementary school building was named after her. Survivors include her sons, Robert Neill Johnson, III, of Bellefonte, PA and Francis Calhoun Johnson and his wife Elizabeth of Columbia, SC.; grandsons Ethan Calhoun Johnson and Luke McDaniel Johnson of Columbia, SC; sister-in-law Lucta Johnson Allen of Florence, SC; brother-in-law Alfred Casburn Johnson of Rock Hill, SC; great-niece and special friend Mary S. Smith of Florence, SC; and many other wonderful nieces and nephews. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by two sisters, Frances C. Smith of Florence, SC and Iralee C. Ferguson of Lima, OH and Florence, SC; and by her adopted sister and friend, Rachel W. Rogers of Albemarle, NC. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, in the Commons Area at Central Methodist Church, followed by a service of memorial in the church sanctuary at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Will Malambri officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are by Waters-Powell Funeral Home of Florence. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stephen Ministry at Central United Methodist Church, The Florence Presbyterian Community, or Pee Dee Academy.
