Obituary of Mary-T. Hayes

Mary Therese (White) Hayes, a well-known resident of Westborough, passed away in her sleep April 20, 2011. Born in Whitman, March 6, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Michael Timothy and Mary Margaret (Donovan) White. She was predeceased by Bernard "Gunner", her husband of 59 years; Jimmy, her son; and her siblings, Helen Powers and John White. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Cardoza of Shrewsbury, John and his wife Brenda of Westborough, Martin and his wife Sally of Shrewsbury and Regina and her husband James Bonofiglio of Auburn; her grandchildren, Renee DaSilva of Pawtucket, R.I., Michael Cardoza of Ashland, Ian and Alex Hayes of Westborough, Sam Hayes of Shrewsbury and Gabriella Bonofiglio of Auburn; her two great-grandchildren, Alexia and Neila DaSilva, and an expected great-grandson. Mary graduated from Chamberlain School of Retailing, Boston, and was employed at William Filenes and Sons Co., Boston, as a buyer. After moving to Westborough in 1958, she was employed by the Westborough Public School Department. There, she worked as school secretary at Fales and Armstrong Schools, retiring in 1987. Mary was a longtime communicant at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in town, where she often volunteered. She was one of the founding members of the towns food pantry. Mary was an avid reader, a devoted wife, an extraordinary mother and a sweet woman to all who knew her. She was a Boston Braves fan initially and joined the Red Sox nation in the 1960s. She was quite the athlete in her day playing basketball and touring with a barnstorming softball team from Whitman. She loved to travel with her husband and enjoyed her many friends and family. The Hayes family would like to extend a special thanks to Shrewsbury Crossing, St. Lukes Parish and Beacon Hospice. Visiting hours will be held Monday, April 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough.
