ROCHESTER, N.Y. Mary Sutton Smith, age 85, wife of the late Thomas W. Smith, M.D., died Thursday, November 6, 2003 after a short illness. Born in Rochester, Mrs. Smith was a graduate of West High and the University of Rochester. After graduation, she was employed by the Strong Memorial Hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Smith were married in 1942 and traveled extensively in connection with Dr. Smith's service as a flight surgeon in the Army. After the war, Dr. and Mrs. Smith lived in Brighton for more than 35 years. Upon Dr. Smith's retirement in 1983, the Smiths moved to Cooperstown. Mrs. Smith enjoyed working as a researcher, transcriber and proof-reader for her daughter, Susan, a professor of English, writer and editor. While in Cooperstown, Mrs. Smith was a patron of the Alice Busch Opera Theater as well as a member of the NYS Historical Association, the Friends of Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and the Friends of the Cooperstown Library. In 1998, Mrs. Smith and her husband returned to Rochester to live at the Valley Manor. Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons, Frank (Diane) Smith of Rochester and Thomas (Patricia) Smith of Albany; grandchildren, Liliana (Craig) Arney, Christopher, Andrew and Emily Smith; great-grandchildren, Tabatha Carpenter and Marissa Arney. She was predeceased by her husband and her two daughters, Susan Sutton Smith and Terry Smith Greco. A memorial prayer service will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Tuesday evening at 7:30.
