Obituary of Mary Smith


LAKELAND -- Ms. Mary Barnes Smith of Lakeland, supervisor of elementary education in Goldsboro, N.C., for 28 years, died of cardiac arrest Friday (Jan. 9, 2004). She was 89. Born in Goldsboro, N.C., she came here from Goldsboro two years ago to live with her first cousin, Mary H. Bunch of Lakeland. "We were like sisters," Bunch said. Ms. Smith taught elementary school for 15 years before she became supervisor of elementary education in Goldsboro, Bunch said. Bunch described Ms. Smith as happy and humble. "She was very pleasant, always had a smile," she said. "She accepted my friends as her friends." Ms. Smith's hobbies included growing flowers, Bunch said, which was her favorite. She was also an avid reader. Ms. Smith was a member of First African Baptist Church, Goldsboro, where she was also a member of the Stitch and Chatter Club. She was a charter member of the Goldsboro Alumni Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was a member of the NAACP, AARP, North Carolina Teacher's Association and the NEA. In addition to her first cousin, Mary, she is survived by her brother, Leslie Barnes, Goldsboro, and sister, Annie M. Kingsbury, Washington, D.C. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton Funeral Chapels & Gardens, 803 Harris St., in Goldsboro, N.C. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First African Baptist Church, Goldsboro. H.W. Oldham Funeral Home, Lakeland.
