Dr. Mary-Ruth Marshall, 76, of Due West, S.C., died Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood. She was born in Worcester, Mass. to the late Robert Leonard and Agnes Bigham Marshall. Ms. Marshall graduated from high school in Summerville, S.C. in 1950 and entered Montreat College in Montreat, N.C., where she worked each summer and graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Music. After graduation, she worked as Director of Christian Education at Waldensian Presbyterian Church in Valdese, N.C. Dr. Marshall then entered the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, where she earned her MRE degree in 1958. She served as the Director of Christian Education at Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama and First Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, Virginia. She then became the Regional Director of Christian Education at Presbyterian Church of New Zealand based in Dunedin. As part of her travels around the world, she was a writer and editor for the The Joint Board of Christian Education of Australia and New Zealand in Melbourne and finally as Director of Youth Services. She entered the doctoral program at Presbyterian School of Christian Education in 1984. Dr. Marshall taught at Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, and the School of Theology of Virginia Union University while completing her doctoral studies. She came to Erskine Theological Seminary in 1988, teaching courses in Christian Education and developing the Master of Arts in Christian Education degree program. Following her retirement from teaching in 2003, she began work in administration at Erskine Theological Seminary and presently served as Associate Dean of Women and Director of Institutional Assessment, and also Non-Discrimination Coordinator at Erskine College and Seminary. Dr. Marshall was a member and Elder of Greenville Presbyterian Church and taught the Seekers Adult Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Committee on Preparation for Ministry, Trinity Presbytery.Surviving Dr. Marshall are her two sisters, Janet Morris of Granite Falls, N.C. and Billie Brightwell of North East, Maryland; a brother, Robert Bigham Marshall of Baker, La.; and two nieces and one nephew.A Celebration of Life Service for Dr. Mary-Ruth Marshall will be held Friday, January 15, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Greenville Presbyterian Church.
