Mary Pamela "Pam" Butler, of Madison, WI, died peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2004, in her home, surrounded by family and friends. Pam was born in Ann Arbor, MI, in 1942, and raised in Louisville. She was schooled at Marquette University and then found a home over the years in Chicago, IL, Merced, CA, Wausau, WI, Minneapolis, MN, and Madison. "Pam was vital and intensely present to and for others, whether intimate family or a passing, needful stranger, speaking her mind enthusiastically, intelligently and often. Yet the gift that drew so many people to her was her almost uncanny awareness and complete acceptance of the whole person behind words shared, no matter how flawed. She brought these gifts out into the world, people-watching on State Street, discussing theology, philosophy and physics with good friends and good coffee and sharing her grandchildren's awe over their nascent discovery of the universe. We carry her legacy with us always and will miss her deeply." Pam was predeceased by her parents, F. Stewart and Agnes (Steiger) Butler of Louisville and her former husband and lasting companion, Warren Cleveland of Madison. She is survived by her seven children, 10 grandchildren and their extended families, Julie Derwinski (Marc) and Kaya, Ari, Gabriel, Vera and David Rosenthal, Nancy Nakkoul, John Derwinski and his son, Gio Cosentino, Mollie Derwinski (Carlos) and Joshua, Grace, Abigail and Emmanuel Cervantes, Greg Cleveland and his partner, Lisa and Casey, Zach and Nicky Pahlow, all of Madison, Amy Derwinski of Minneapolis, MN, and Courtney Derwinski of New York, NY. She is also survived by two sisters and their families, Nancy (Butler) Lindsay (Bob) and Allison, Robin and Michael of Louisville and Carol (Butler) Habeeb (Richard) and Jennifer, Brad and Brian of Sanford, N.C.; and her loving cousins and many friends. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2004, at the Chapel of the Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Care Center, 5395 East Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI. Gunderson East Funeral Home in Madison in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Pam's memory to the St. Vincent de Paul Elizabeth Seton House, 1309 Williamson St., Madison, WI 53703.
