Obituary of Mary Mitchell

MITCHELL--Mary, died June 6, 2013. Mary is mourned by all of her colleagues at Scholastic where she served as Senior Vice President of Marketing for Scholastic Education. Mary was a human dynamo. Her commitment to improving educational outcomes for underserved children drove her professional efforts and philanthropic work. In both venues, she was an innovator, visionary and marketing genius. Mary was the driving force behind the marketing of all of Scholastic Education's major technology programs, including READ 180, which became the best-known single brand in the K12 education market. As a founding trustee of Girls Prep, Mary was devoted to providing a quality single-sex education for families unable to afford private school. She was instrumental in opening Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School in 2005 and helping the program expand to include Middle School in 2009. Mary was a champion talent spotter who mentored innumerable individuals directly and indirectly, and they carry her brilliance onwards. Mary is survived by her parents, Linda and Paul Mitchell, a brother, Jim Mitchell and his wife Kristen, a sister, Patty Gallagher and her husband, Joe, and their three children, Clare, Kevin and Grace Gallagher. Contributions in her memory can be made to Public Preparatory Network, 291 Broadway, Suite 1202, New York, NY 10007. Margery Mayer
EVP, Scholastic Inc.
