Gray, Mary Marshall EAST GREENBUSH Mary Marshall Gray, 82, of East Greenbush, died peacefully after fighting a long battle with Alzheimer's, at Van Rensselaer Manor on May 8, 2011. She was born in Minneapolis, the only child of the late Marcus and Marie Marshall. Mary is survived by her husband of 60 years, Augustus Thomas Gray; daughters, Susan (Richard) Petteys of Granville, N..Y., and Kathryn "Taffy" Gray of East Greenbush; son, Thomas M. (Lisa) Gray of Bendersville, Pa.; granddaughter, Jennifer (Nathan) Sims of Latham, N.Y.; grandsons, Christopher Petteys and Michael Guadagnino of East Greenbush and Bradley Petteys of Queensbury, N.Y.; grand-daughters, Sarah, Jessica and Nicole Gray of Bendersville; and great-granddaughter, Gabriella Sims of Latham, N.Y. Mary also leaves behind her two canine friends, Dakota and Belle. Mary graduated from Bethlehem High School in 1946 and St. Lawrence University in 1950, with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Mary taught for the East Greenbush school system from September 1965 through June 1986, mainly teaching third and fourth grades at Donald P. Sutherland School in Nassau. Mary, a loving and generous woman, was also the long term caregiver for her mother, Marie Marshall, her mother-in-law, Florence Gray, and her brothers-in-law, Edward and Robert Gray. Mary, an avid gardener, loved to entertain friends and family at her home, and shared her love of reading with all she knew, especially her students. Mary also loved playing bridge with her friends, going out to breakfast or lunch with her husband, and going out to lunch with her daughters and granddaughter. Mary and Gus have been longtime members of the United Methodist Church in East Greenbush. Mary was loved by all who knew her; a joy to be around because of her amazing quick wit and sense of humor. Mary leaves behind a shining example of how to deal with daily challenges with optimism, patience, and kindness. In accordance with her wishes, Mary has donated her body to the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in East Greenbush on Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the East Greenbush Community Library in honor of Mary's love of reading, or to your local humane society.
