Mary Margaret Marshall (nee Kelly) of Scotch Plains, N.J., cherished wife of the late Harry W. Marshall, died on Jan. 30, 2013, at the age of 86, just six weeks after her husband's passing. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield, N.J. There will be a private family burial. Born in 1926 in New York, N.Y., Mary was the eldest child of John and Mae (nee Keating) Kelly, and was raised, along with her beloved brother, Jack, in Corona, Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, N.Y. Mrs. Marshall was a proud 1944 graduate of Cathedral High School in Manhattan, which set her firmly on the course of lifelong learning. She loved school, the 1939 World's Fair, Junior Achievement, her close circle of friends and colorful Irish relatives, tap dancing, working at Saks Fifth Avenue and B. Altman's, and all that New York City had to offer. Three weeks after graduating from high school, she met Harry Marshall, a deck cadet and later Captain in the U.S. Merchant Marine. During their 65 years of devoted marriage, they lived in Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey, and proudly raised six children. She and her husband were each other's most valued friend and companion, and they were most fulfilled when in each other's company, hand in hand. Mrs. Marshall is survived by her six children, Thomas and his wife Renee of Plantation, FL, John and his wife Cheryl, of Short Hills, NJ, Mary of Concord, MA, Michael and his wife Rosa of Tampa, FL, Anne of Scotch Plains, NJ, Susan and her husband Steven Peckman of Wall, NJ; and her six grandchildren: grandsons Sean and Kevin of California, and granddaughters Kelly and Logan of New York, and Haley and Bryce of NJ. She was predeceased by her brother Jack Kelly of Chicago. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory and that of her husband's, Captain Harry Marshall, may be made to the Friends of the American Merchant Marine Museum, Kings Point, NY; or to the National Maritime Historical Society, Peekskill, NY.
