Mary Martin McIntyre passed away peacefully at her Wilson Lake home Oct. 25, 2010, after an extended illness.She was born Feb. 10, 1924, to Robert and Margaret Cameron Boyd in Birmingham, Ala. The family moved to Sheffield when she was 3 years of age. She graduated from Sheffield High School, where she received the D.A.R. Citizenship Award. Her lifelong love of music began with piano lessons at the age of 8, and during her high school years, she became the accompanist for the Sheffield Rotary Club where she met her future husband, John Clark Martin. She attended Montevallo College, where she was elected president of her freshman class.She married John Martin in 1943 and continued her study of music at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in Ohio while her husband served his country overseas. Upon his return, the couple settled in Sheffield, he to practice law in Tuscumbia, while she raised their four children.Outside of her loving commitment to her family, Mary McIntyre expressed a lifelong devotion to her community in countless ways. She served as organist for First Presbyterian Church in Sheffield for 42 years and served the Presbyterian Women in many capacities. She served as president of the Muscle Shoals Area Service League (now the Junior League) and as a member of the board of the Muscle Shoals Concerts (now On Stage). She served several terms as president of the Friends of the Sheffield Public Library and was actively involved in supporting the library for many years. During a period of years, she gave wholeheartedly of her time and her resources as a member of the board of directors of the Tennessee Valley Art Association during its critical years of growth and expansion and as president of the Art Association Guild.Widowed in 1984, she married Robert Edward McIntyre, a Sheffield High School classmate, in 1991. They enjoyed an active family and social life and traveling for many years.She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant daughter, Joan; her first husband; and her brother, Robert Baxter Boyd.She is survived by her husband, Robert McIntyre; four children, Peggy Martin McCloy, of Florence, Elizabeth Martin Munson, of Atlanta, Kathryn Martin Morrow, of Muscle Shoals, and John Clark Martin Jr., of Atlanta; sister, Kathryn Boyd Rice; six grandchildren, Matthew and Kate Davis, Margaret McCloy Custer, and Travis, Lydia and Cadence Martin; stepchildren, Michael and Patricia McIntyre; sons-in-law, James Munson and David Morrow; daughter-in-law, Sharon Ferguson Martin; and numerous nieces and nephews.Her family expresses special thanks for the extraordinary care and support given to Mary McIntyre throughout her illness by her CNA caregiver, Kay Dunlap.Pallbearers will be Karl Bradley, Michael Ford, Pete Morris, Dr. Stephen Rice, Donald Ruggles and Stephan Tomlinson. Honorary pallbearers will be George Carter, Robert C. Lewis, Robert Lindsey Nathan and Dr. John Rice.A celebration of her life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at First Presbyterian Church in Sheffield, with internment to follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Morrison Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tennessee Valley Art Association, P.O. Box 474, Tuscumbia, AL 35674, or a favorite charity.
