Mary Louise Smith, 94, formerly of North Vernon, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Riverwalk Village, Noblesville. Mrs. Smith was previously a teacher at Vernon Elementary School and taught sixth grade at North Vernon Elementary. She retired from the Jennings County School System in 1982. Mrs. Smith was a 1931 graduate of North Vernon High School. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Indiana University. She was a member of First Baptist Church, North Vernon, the North Vernon Chapter 183, Order of the Eastern Star, the Jennings County Retired Teachers Association and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, and was a former member of the Business and Professional Women's organization. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and working crossword and word search puzzles. Born March 16, 1914, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Fred and Icely Green Dixon, both of whom preceded her in death. On Jan. 8, 1936, in Bedford, she married Leslie Smith, who preceded her in death June 6, 2000. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann (Shokri) Radpour, Noblesville, Frances (Jim) Harr, North Vernon, and Lois (Jerry) Beguhn, New Castle; one brother, Edward (Wanda) Dixon, North Vernon; two sisters, Kathleen McGarvey, Middletown, Pa., and Geneva (Marion) Gilkey, Lucas, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Shokrina (Peter) Beering and Jackie (Kevin) Rowles, Carmel, Diana (Tim) Hon, Cicero, Leslie Bohall, North Vernon, Chris (Angie) Harr, Bloomington, Carrie Hunter, Muncie, and Andy Beguhn, New Castle; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe Dixon, Clark Dixon, Ralph Dixon and Bob Dixon. Bob Ochs will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m. Thursday at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home, North Vernon. Burial will take place at Vernon Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from noon until time of service Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association. www.dovesharprudicel.com
