MARY LOU NELSON (NEE GARRETT) Mary Lou Nelson (nee Garrett), age 70, passed away on January 5, 2014 at home with her family by her side. She was born May 12, 1943 in Gary, IN and attended Edison High School in the 1950’s. Mary Lou married Laren Payne in 1959 and together had four children. On November 16, 1982 she married her loving husband of 31 years, David Nelson who survives. Also surviving are: daughter, Dawn (Gene) Berghefer of Burns Harbor, IN; sons: Larry Payne of Valparaiso, IN, Gene Payne of Panama City Beach, FL, and Darren Payne of Chesterton, IN; brothers: Robert Everett of Birmingham, AL and Bill Garrett of Chesterton, IN; and sister, Susie Klimczyk of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren: Angie and Mick Berghefer of Burns Harbor, IN, Kim Berghefer of Louisville, KY, and Jay and Steven Payne of Flower Mound, TX; great grandchildren: Austin and Kylie Berghefer of Burns Harbor, IN; daughter-in-law, Lesa Payne; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents: John Garrett and Louise Shirley; former husband, Laren Payne; mother-in-law, Geraldine Shadowens; and brother-in- law, Joe Klimczyk. Mary Lou was a loving and devoted wife and mother who always put others first and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. A family memorial celebrating her life will be held Mother’s Day.
