HARRELL, Mary Lee Barnes, 74, of Plant City, Fla., was received into the loving arms of her heavenly Father Wednesday, June 24, 2009. She was born in Plant City January 9, 1935, to Charles Olin and Helen Overton Barnes. She graduated from Plant City High School in 1952 and attended Florida Southern College. In 1954 she married Francis Noel "Frank" Harrell and accompanied him to many duty stations with the U.S. Coast Guard during his 28-year career and served as president of the Officers Wives Club. When she returned to Plant City in 1980, she became active in East Hillsborough Historical Society and served as treasurer. In 1993 she helped to compile and edit Florida Connections Through Bible Records, Volume 1, for the Florida State Genealogical Society. She pursued family genealogy and helped many others trace family roots and promoted the joys of family reunions. She was a descendent of pioneer families in Hillsborough and Lake Counties and held membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and Plant City Chapter No. 1931 United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mary Lee was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, and in retirement, she served as church bookkeeper, volunteered in the office and sang in the choir. She had also been a volunteer for several years at the Strawberry Festival. She was awarded many prizes for her weavings and tapestries. She loved to cook and share recipes and had a wonderful gift for hospitality. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Frank Harrell. She is survived by her son, John Olin Harrell (Carol); daughter, Helen H. Howard; brothers, Charles O. Barnes Jr., Noel Barnes (Patricia) and David Barnes (Melody); sisters, Betsy B. Paschall, Jolyn Tyson (Raymond) and Lyra Hoeft (Bill); grandchildren, Christina Howard, Charlie Howard and Thomas McCain; and many nieces and nephews. The family extends a special "Thank You" to her caregiver of several years, Kelly Price. A celebration of her life will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church of Plant City, and she will be laid to rest at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Haught Funeral Home.
