CARIBOU and PRESQUE ISLE - Mary Katherine Mitchell, 83, went home to be with her Lord, Monday, April 9, 2012, after a brief battle with cancer, with her family by her side. Mary was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Caribou, the youngest daughter of the late Perry and Mary Mitchell. Mary graduated from Caribou High School in 1947 and had a long retail sales career with J.C. Penney Co., in Caribou and Presque Isle. She retired in 1993. She was a 78-year member of Bessie Gray Memorial United Methodist Church of Caribou, where she was active in the Jennie Lyons Circle. In 1961, she joined Elizabeth Chapter No. 108 Order of the Eastern Star, Caribou. She held a life membership in Lunar Chapter No. 126 OES, Presque Isle. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling to Japan, Europe, England, Ireland and Alaska. She was an avid card player and especially enjoyed the challenge of a bridge game. She belonged to several bridge groups throughout the years. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Meda, at six weeks old; and her oldest sister and best friend, Margaret Brewer, in 2010. Mary is survived by her sister, Norma Shafer of Katy, Texas; niece, Sandra Brewer May of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; nephew, Richard Brewer of Richmond, Va.; niece, Brenda Brewer of Joliet, Ill.; and niece, Elizabeth Callahan of Katy, Texas. The family thanks Dr. Vatsala Kirtani of The Aroostook Medical Center for her compassionate care of Mary. A special thank you goes to the Hospice of Aroostook team for their end of life support of Mary and her family. A celebration of Mary's life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou, with the Rev. Tom Bentum officiating. A reception will be after the service at the funeral home. There will be a private family committal service at Evergreen Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Mary may be made to Trustees Memorial Fund at Gray Memorial Methodist Church; or House of Comfort Hospice Foundation at http://www.aroostookhospicehouse.com.
