Funeral for Mary Katherine Mitchell, 90, of Decatur will be today, Sept. 26, 2005, at 4 p.m. at Mount Carmel Church of Christ in Athens with Gary Patton and James Bridges officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Dement Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 at the church.Mrs. Mitchell, who died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at Decatur General Hospital, was born Aug. 16, 1915, in Limestone County. She was a member of Somerville Road Church of Christ. She retired from Somerville Road School after 42 and a half years of teaching and was president of the Alabama Classroom Teachers Association and president of the Alabama Education Association.Survivors include her husband, James O. Mitchell; one son, Jim Mitchell of Decatur; three brothers, Paul Smith, Marvin Smith and Ralph Smith, all of Athens; one grandson, Brad Mitchell of Birmingham; one granddaughter, Laynee McWilliams of Niceville, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Caroline Mitchell and Mary Brennan McWilliams; and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Brad Mitchell, Don Smith, Sean McWilliams, John Carter, Will Preston, Tim Holt and Phillip Smith.Honorary pallbearers will be Hugo Bates, Ross Smith, Thomas Ezell and Paul Smith Jr.Memorials may be made to the Childhaven Orphanage in Cullman.
