Obituary of Mary K. Carter


CARTER Dr. Mary K., passed away on Wednesday, August 19th at the North Hill Hearth Center in Needham, MA. Born October 19, 1915, in Boston, she was the beloved daughter of the late James. F. and Mary (Brennan) Carter. Dr. Carter was a graduate of Arlington High School. She received a B.S. in Education from Salem State College, a Masters and Doctorate in Education from Boston University. Dr. Carter was an educator for 50 years. During the course of her teaching career she taught in a one room school in W. Fairlee, VT, North Reading, Arlington and Brookline, MA. Her last 26 years of teaching were spent at Framingham State College, where she received The Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to the college. Dr. Carter was active in many organizations. She belonged to the Association of University Professors, Mass Teachers Association, National Council of Teacher of Mathematics, Mass Association of School Committees, League of Women Voters, Arlington Catholic Women’s Club, Salem State College Alumni Association, and Friends of the Library. She served nine years on the Arlington School Committee, three years as chairperson. Dr. Carter was very involved in the St. James Church in Arlington. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. She also traveled extensively through-out the United States and abroad. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers James E., Francis J. and Paul V. Carter. Dr. Carter is survived by her sister Louise (Carter) Tatko of Middle Granville, NY, many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 24th at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington at 11A.M. Visiting hours will be held on Monday 9:30-10:30A.M. in the Keefe Funeral home, 5 Chestnut St., ARLINGTON. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dr. Carter’s memory in the name of Neil and Tyler Buckley to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, 8085 Saltburg, Road, Suite 201, Pittsburgh, PA 15239.
