Mary Jayne Medlin Martin-Vegue Mary Jayne Medlin Martin-Vegue, 87, a retired professor of physical education at Florida State University, died Monday, June 9, 2008. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. EDT Friday, June 13, in The Gallery at the Parry Center at Westminster Oaks. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Southern Scholarship Foundation, 322 Stadium Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32304.Mary Jane was born in Carterville, Ga., on March 15, 1921, but grew up in Miami, Fla., where she graduated from Miami Senior High School in 1938. It was there that she met her high-school sweetheart, George Boyd Martin-Vegue, (1921-1954). Mary Jane came to Tallahassee in the fall of 1938 when she enrolled in Florida State College for Women.She earned a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1942 and later earned a master's degree in education. After graduation, she worked for the USO in the area of recreation until the end of World War II. Upon his return from serving in the United States Navy, Boyd and Mary Jane were married in Miami in 1945 and returned to Tallahassee, where Boyd earned a master's degree in history.Mary Jane and Boyd continued their educational pursuits in Austin, Texas, where he earned the Ph.D. in history and she studied deaf education, becoming fluent in American Sign Language. Boyd accepted an appointment to the History Department at Florida State, so they returned to Tallahassee in 1951. Following his death in 1954, she began her teaching career at FSU and taught until her retirement in 1985.They had one child, a son, George Boyd "Chip" Martin-Vegue (1952-2002). A wonderful and talented teacher, Mary Jane touched the lives of many students. She was also a kind and generous person who loved to help people. She was active in establishing women's sports, especially golf, and supported the athletic programs at the university.There were memberships in many professional associations such as Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, NEA and AAUP, as well as civic organizations, including the Tallahassee Literary Club, the Woman's Club and the Tallahassee Garden Club. Mary Jayne is survived by her granddaughter, Haley Martin-Vegue; daughter-in-law, Betsy Martin-Vegue; and nieces, nephews and cousins.In addition to her husband and son, she was predeceased by a sister, Mertice; her brother, Noble; and longtime family friend, Dr. Grace I. Fox.
